of my favorite age-inappropriate toy lines to pick up is the Imaginext
Dinosaur range. I've had a pretty steady streak at finding these for $7
at grocery stores, which continued with a Dimetrodon late in
2012. As our modern descendant of Dino-Riders, they have some neat
play features, helmets, and bright colors. Unlike the originals there
are no attempts to amp up authenticity and the age range is such that no
retail store worker will ever suspect I'm buying them for myself which,
as a toy collector, is a fun thing to watch go down. "I bet someone's
been really good to deserve this!" I always say "Yes, someone really
has been!" I spoil myself.
think I've mentioned more than once that I don't understand why
Mattel's imprint Fisher-Price doesn't leverage its brands in Imaginext
more. Specifically, He-Man. Older kids won't bite but its winning
combination of distinctive and easy-to-remember names plus memorable
vehicles would make it the perfect fit for the under-6 set. The Alpha Blade
is incredibly similar to the Roton vehicle, which also had a geared
gimmick involving a spinning blade. Had this been black and red
instead of grey and blue, I'm sure fans would be accusing Mattel of
stealing from themselves.
other than it looks neat. It's amazing to me that one of the more
interesting toys in recent memory is a vehicle with a cool, nameless
alien figure aimed at toddlers. It's a durable little set and feels
like it could withstand some abuse in sandboxes, tubs, and with actual
children - which is something I don't think I can say about most toys
examined here.

The 3-inch green figure has blue claws and red hair like Blanka from Street Fighter II.
His legs are bony, but by and large he could pass as an alien crab.
Sure, he's got a little red tail on his butt but who am I to judge?
Sculpting is on par with or better than most Imaginext figures (in that
it has original sculpting) and he's got a little "i" branded on his
ankle. Compared to the creatures in the blind-bags or previous years
of Space figures, this is pretty amazing. The detail is positively
toylike and the bright, neon colors are sure to blind collectors from
its greatness. It wouldn't stun me to see this mold redecorated in the
future, warts and all. (It has warts.)
like toys. I like characters, but toys I like more - mostly because a
new toy line could birth a whole new generation of characters and, yes,
more toys. The Imaginext Ion Scorpion comes from a space line
that feels fresh and also pays tribute to a couple of decades of space
toys. The figure looks like it could be the grandson of Repto or
Kronos, and the colors are bright and inviting - like most action
figures aren't. Were it not for super hero toys, the toy aisle would
be an increasingly muted and largely dreary. The 3-inch aisles are
where it gets the most interesting with Imaginext and to a lesser
extent, Hasbro/Playskool's Robot Heroes and Super Hero Adventures lines.
(Jedi Force is effectively dead, so let's keep moving along.) I
snagged this set on a tip from the one and only Matt Doughty that they
started hitting Kohl's last month, and as an added bonus I found that
they were 50% off when I was there. I couldn't say no at that price -
Imaginext single blind-bag figures are usually $3. $5 for a figure with
a vehicle? I'm sold!
The Mummy
is another good Imaginext figure, in that it's another fine figure that
actually adds new sculpted elements rather than slapping paint on the
same basic male buck we've seen for years. And yes, I realize the
absurdity in nitpicking a toy that's labeled "collectible" and sold to
people who aren't tall enough to pour themselves a glass of water yet.
There's more new stuff to be found - a lot of it! The previous small vehicles we showed (Ion Crab, Ion Scorpion, Alpha Cutter) are joined by a fourth vehicle - the Alpha Exosuit. I've spotted this at Kohl's ($9.99, on sale for $5.99) as well as at Walmart ($6.97).

It's not as impressive as the other vehicles, but it is cheaper than the Dinosaur Exosuit available at a store probably near you right now.

Joining these vehicles are two new larger ones - the Ion Orbiter and Alpha Star.
Each one was $22.99 at Kohl's and features electronic lights and
sounds, if you're into that sort of thing. Or, you can support this
blog and my other projects by buying them at Amazon via the links below!

Old people like myself will remember the name "Alpha Star" as one of the shining gems of the Fisher-Price Adventure People toy line in the early 1980s. This new version has no real similarities to it, but it warms the heart to see the name used on a new toy again.
Right now, Kohl's has Imaginext for 50% off. As an added bonus, they're getting new stuff like the Alpha Blade (pictured). It includes a small vehicle and a new sculpt pilot, with a removable helmet and a gun that can be held in his hand or mounted on the vehicle. Kohl's normal price is $9.99, but on sale for $5 it becomes a real bargain.

The vehicle has a wheel on the bottom, so when you roll the vehicle on the carpet the blade spins around like a UFO or a buzzsaw. It's a lot of fun!

Older collectors will be delighted at the "Alpha" naming convention, which Fisher-Price used previously in its Adventure People line of the 1970s and 1980s. I had an Alpha Star as a kid and it's a beautiful toy.

Called "Raptor," the figure is similar to the previous releases with a retooled head and gear. Now in bright orange, the little guy has a frilled collar like the spitters from Jurassic Park and the opening mouth has been removed.

The gear seems to be changed quite a bit, and the coloring looks decidedly less evil.Adam16bithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17369348859276892966noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970628065311688662.post-46920322285532771692012-12-12T00:04:00.002-08:002012-12-12T00:05:17.347-08:00Deal: Imaginext Toy Story Pizza Planet, $17.49 at AmazonAmazon.com has the Imaginext Toy Story Pizza Planet set on sale for $17.59. in the current range of Imaginext Dinosaurs can work as a decent
substitute for their kids now. Eschewing some of the science that
makes dinosaurs more feathery and less awesome, the Raptor is as you see
it: a red mence with a saddle, helmet, and seating for a single figure.
The sculpting is more than a little cartoony and the chunky figures
are clearly designed for smaller hands, but for ten bucks you really
can't go wrong. (Plus the seats work great for Glyos Armorvor figures,
too, if you need to make some customized Rulons for your neo Dino-Rider
toy collection.)
Check it out!
Another big thanks to Matt for pointing these out to us as we have not yet seen them in our stores. Once again our pal Matt sent in a ton of new photos of new exclusive and non-exclusive Imaginext. Thank you Matt! For starters, Toys R Us has a sub-line of space-themed exclusives like Woody with Spaceship. Woody is in a futuristic outfit and includes one of the sentries from the beginning of Toy Story 2, plus a rocket for some reason. I like it.

On the non-exclusive front, we're seeing Army Men and Buzz Lightyear with Jetpack in non-movie colors. The Army Men are particularly interesting in that we are now seeing toys of superlative quality designed to recall the cheapest of the cheap plastic toys.

Buzz Lightyear now has his Star Command playset, another entry in Toys R Us' growing suite of exclusives. It comes with a small starship modeled after the Buzz Lightyear packaging from the Toy Story films, plus numerous moving parts and some sort of elevator. Buzz comes in unique colors here.

Rounding out this batch of exclusive photos is the delightfully demented Rex with Spaceship, which finally gives you the dinosaur-and-vehicle play you were denied in the 1980s when Galoob opted not to pick up the Dinosaucers option. A small Zurg Sentry is included here as well. Thanks again for the pictures, Matt, we really appreciate it here!Adam16bithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17369348859276892966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970628065311688662.post-2667292748806202962012-11-09T21:03:00.002-08:002012-11-09T21:03:38.855-08:00New Imaginext DC Comics Super Friends Exclusives Spotted

Our pal Matt strikes again with tons of new pictures! Part of the ever-growing Toys R Us exclusive Gotham City sub-line of DC Super Friends, this Batwing is showing up now. There are several other vehicles, including an armored van for Two-Face, and some new mini vehicles.

This duo of Cyborg & ATV and Batman & Rover recycle existing vehicles with new deco, although I'm pretty sure this is the first Cyborg figure in the line. The Rover has been used for Green Lantern as well as the space line before, and these are exclusive to Toys R Us.

While not exclusive, it appears Batman & Sub is showing up as well as Aquaman & Robo Shark at Target stores for about $7.29. Costs are going up, but hey, that's the toy market!

Rounding out the new DC offerings is a Mr. Freeze Headquarters, significantly larger than the mini one we saw at Toys R Us a couple of years back. This doesn't seem to be an exclusive, and it includes both Mr. Freeze as well as a snowy Batman. Happy hunting!Adam16bithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17369348859276892966noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970628065311688662.post-50815353160117218852012-11-05T21:37:00.003-08:002012-11-05T21:37:56.339-08:00New Imaginext Dinosaur, Store Exclusives Arriving

Pterodactyl & ATV. Note the flapping wings and giant chomping jaw! This is not an exclusive. (And I haven't seen one in the wild yet myself.)

Imaginext DC Super Friends Batcopter & Mr. Freeze Jet. This is a Walmart exclusive, and we've seen these come and go locally quite fast.

Imaginext DC Super Friends Batwing & The Joker Hauler. This is also a Walmart exclusive, and a nice thing to buy because, let's face it, it's super cool.
So it's no surprise that the Ankylosaurus
and his dinosaur buddies all reek of two other great "feature"-driven
1980s toy lines-- Tyco's Dino-Riders (rumored to be owned by Mattel, who
also owns the Tyco brand) and Kenner's M.A.S.K. (still owned by
Hasbro.) As you can see, what you get here is an adorable kid-friendly
dinosaur, a clear yellow mask (similar to the "Split Seconds" line from
Kenner) and a bunch of other play gear for about ten bucks. If it came
in an enclosed box so it wouldn't be covered in shopper bacteria before
your kid buys it to stick in his mouth/up his nose, what you'd have
here is a recipe for greatness. As it's marketed to toddlers, it
doesn't get a lot of traction with collectors.

Feel like being patient for a while? This forum shows an image of the as-of-yet-unreleased Gotham Jail with Bane set coming in summer 2012, no doubt in time for The Dark Knight Rises, a movie which is not at all appropriate for the audience for this product. (Well, the young audience anyway.) It's about as close to an Arkham Asylum as the line is likely to get. Also shown is a Joker Tank, a new Bat-tumbler-esque vehicle, and a new Batman Jetpack set.

The Joker Tank is particularly neat in how it recalls character-specific vehicles from Kenner in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Don't miss this post-- be sure to check these out over at The Rumor Buster!Adam16bithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17369348859276892966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970628065311688662.post-82625803858610580682011-08-28T00:13:00.000-07:002011-08-28T00:20:19.615-07:00Imaginext Advent Calendar Approaches<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 243px; height: 243px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W8pJrFnDGTA/Tlnqs4EN7OI/AAAAAAAAAaY/mhRSlS4KhHo/s320/W2848-imaginext-advent-calendar-b-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5645801664570846434" />After years of LEGO and Playmobil getting in on the action, Fisher-Price has an Imaginext Advent Calendar which will, presumably, be hitting stores soon. Focusing on a city rescue theme, the motorcycle, figures, and rescue equipment are doled out to kids one-per-day leading up to Christmas. (As is tradition, you can just rip it open and play with it too.)

For now there's only the one known style, but who knows-- maybe next year we'll see Super Friends or Dinosaur-specific calendars!Adam16bithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17369348859276892966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6970628065311688662.post-63845335086988709802011-08-25T13:36:00.000-07:002011-08-25T13:42:16.345-07:00Kmart Gets New DC Comics Super Friends Gift SetA Kmart store in Phoenix, AZ today had a new (to me) gift set featuring Batman, Green Lantern, and the Joker with a Batcopter, a small disc-firing Green Lantern vehicle, and the Joker's hammer motorcycle. The set is $24.99.

I was unable to get a picture, but you can see it on this eBay auction.

The Joker and cycle seem to be repackaged versions of the existing basic ($6) set. The Batcopter has a unique deco, with a blue window and a black body. Batman also seems to have an exclusive paint job. The Green Lantern figure looks the same as the others (there were none to compare to confirm this), but the car seems to be exclusive to this set-- so far, at least.

So 2 old pieces, 4 "new" pieces from the look of it-- good hunting!
Charlie Parry wrote in with a picture of the new Kmart Exclusive Imaginext Dinosaurs Set, which should be in stores now. Each set is $24.99 and includes redecoes of the Pteranodon (in blue) and the Raptor (in green).

To date this is the only known exclusive Dinosaurs set (with the Dino-Riders style toys) but as always, we'll keep you posted as we find more!Adam16bithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17369348859276892966noreply@blogger.com0
